Changing Lives, One step at a time
Since 2018, Thrive Afya Tanzania has changed lives for the better.
We aim to improve access to critical services that the communities we serve and the government can rely on. To do this, our programs are mobile meaning we travel to rural areas to provide services where they are needed the most. We currently offer four critical programs: HIV testing, HIV care and treatment, integrated reproductive health services, and youth-friendly services. Through these programs, we have been able to change many lives.
We often report our numbers to demonstrate our impact. People tested, people receiving services, people educated. And we should. Those numbers are impressive.
To date, we have tested over 64,000 people for HIV and connected 258 newly identified people living with HIV to long-term care. Over 8,700 women have received family planning services in just two years. Over 11,300 students from secondary schools across Babati have received critical health and life skills education.
But when we take a moment to look deeper than the numbers, we find the stories of people whose lives have changed from their interaction with TAT.
We look at the woman who thanked us generously for traveling all the way out to the rural area in which she lived to test people for HIV. She would never have gotten tested for HIV but we were there. She decided to get tested, not knowing her life was about to change forever. In that moment, she thanked us for connecting her to care so she did not feel lost on how to move forward.
We look at the students from our youth-friendly services (YFS) days who joyfully absorb all the new information that they are receiving from health to life skills. They are grateful and empowered to use their newfound knowledge to change their life trajectory.
We look at all the women who are now able to choose when to start a family and decide how many children to have and when.
So, it is not just 258 people connected to long-term care. It is 258 people who tested positive for HIV and did not know. It is 258 people who are now receiving medications and connected to a clinical team to maintain their health. It is 258 people who can now live a long, healthy life. It is 258 men, women, and students who didn’t know the next steps in their health journey… until TAT made their path a little bit clearer.

Mobile HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT)
We provide free, rapid, and confidential HIV testing for urban and rural communities. People receive their results, counseling, and free condoms within 15-20 minutes. Those who test positive after a confirmatory test are referred directly to the nearest Care and Treatment Center (CTC) to receive medications.
To date, we have tested over 64,700 people for HIV through our mobile outreach. During those testing days, we have newly identified 258 people living with HIV. Through testing days and special campaigns, we have provided health education to over 32,000 people.

I am so grateful to Thrive Afya Tanzania (TAT). I had no idea I was living with HIV. I never would have gotten tested if you hadn't come all the way out here. I would not have known what to do or where to go to get care. Thank you for helping me get medication. I am so grateful.

Mobile Care and Treatment Centers (CTC)
We provide support to new and existing Care and Treatment Centers (CTCs), where people living with HIV (PLWHIV) can receive their medications and other health services. We provide transportation, supervision, and motivation for district medical staff to train local medical staff at rural health clinics. Local staff are trained to run a CTC and provide services to PLWHIV. After two years of support (or as needed) from TAT, the CTC is run by local staff with check-ins by the district staff.
We have established four new CTCs and supported two existing CTCs:
- TAT established CTCs: Mwada, Dareda Kati, Kisangaji, and Mutuka
- Existing CTCs in need of support: Minjingu and Nakwa
- CTCs turned back over to government: Mwada, Dareda Kati, and Nakwa
- Currently supporting: Minjingu, Kisangaji, and Mutuka
Together, the CTCs support approximately 150 people living with HIV every month. PLWHIV are often able to attend a CTC every six months if they are adherent to their medications. With the establishment of new CTCs, PLWHIV can receive care closer to home removing access barriers such as long walks or transportation fees, making it easier for people to remain adherent to their medication and stay healthy.

Mobile Integrated Reproductive Health Services
We provide free, mobile integrated reproductive health services. These services act as a one-stop shop for women seeking family planning. While receiving family planning counseling and provision, women can also receive free HIV testing and cervical cancer screening. This is a mobile service conducted at local clinics or community centers where access to family planning is lacking or severely limited.
TAT initiated this program in 2022 and in two years, we have provided services to over 8,500 women with two-thirds of women choosing a long-term method of contraception. We have also screened 5,540 women for cervical cancer connecting 34 women who screened positive to further care.

Youth Education & Empowerment
We host YFS days at secondary schools, where students can receive critical health and life skills education and services while having fun. We provide education on HIV, cervical cancer, family planning, and life skills while maintaining a fun, engaging environment. Students can also receive free HIV testing.
We have taught over 11,300 students new knowledge about their health with the life skills to advocate for themselves. Students have expressed how empowering the information they received was and how it can change the trajectory of their lives.
Students also receive HIV testing and we have been able to connect students who have tested positive for HIV to counseling, care, and other resources they may need.

I learned many things today that I did not know before about health, especially family planning. I am grateful to TAT because we learned a lot about life skills particularly for young women because we are facing many challenges. This education empowered us mentally by teaching us about family planning and how to prevent early pregnancies. I am grateful to TAT and I hope that TAT will offer this education to other schools. Expanding this education will help create a better community.
