World AIDS Day 2017
On December 1, 2017, we celebrated World AIDS Day in Gallapo, Babati. In partnership with the Babati District Council, we organized a successful event with free HIV testing, education, guest speakers, and lots of music and dancing.
Our testing is free, fast, and confidential and we link those who test positive to Care and Treatment Centers (CTCs), where they can receive medications and care. Our testing tent had a steady flow of people all day long waiting to get tested and get their results. While they waited for their results, people could listen to music, watch the dance competition, and join the dancing themselves. Everyone received a red ribbon to represent HIV and it was fun to watch the sea of red ribbons around our testing site in support of World AIDS Day.
During the event, the chancellors of Gallapo welcomed everyone and the District Medical Office and other guest speakers provided HIV/AIDS education about how HIV is transmitted and the ways to prevent infection. We were also honored to be joined by support group members from Gallapo, Qash, and Mamire wards in Babati. They graciously shared their stories with us and the rest of their community. Each of these individuals is making a difference in their communities and we are so proud to work alongside them.
At the end of the day, we tested 268 people for HIV. Thank you to all who made this event a great success!
